Steal Elite Coach Darin’s techniques that booked him an iconic role in the runaway hit Obsession:

A: A-Game Mentality

“I’m never going to book this, so…”

This role was not on brand. In fact, it was basically the polar opposite.

Darin usually plays “white collar jerks.” This character was a hippie-dippy crystal shop owner.

But instead of writing himself off, he flipped it: “There’s no way I’m getting this role. So, I’m going to have fun!” 

That is expert A-Game Mentality. Using low odds as permission to play, not a reason to shrink.

B: Business

Struggling actors only know their craft. Working actors know how the whole machine works.

At the callback, Darin changed nothing. He repeated the exact choices from his audition tape because he knows how casting works.

A callback isn’t where they want to find out if you have range or new ideas. They already know you can act; that’s why you’re back. 

A callback is where they meet you, find out if you’re easy to work with, and confirm you can repeat what worked. Why? Because you’ll need to do it at least ten times on the shoot day.

C: Craft

“If I’m entertained, they probably will be too.”

What was on the audition tape that earned him the callback?

Reading the script, the character immediately reminded him of The Big Lebowski.

Instead of playing it safe, he leaned all the way in, creating his own take on the comedy classic. Yes… in a horror movie.

The tape made both him and his reader laugh, so he figured the casting team probably would, too.

He was right.
